Living Proof Issue #3: House Industries

House

Do you think people will realize the impact house has had?

I’d have to go downstairs and dust off the crystal ball. (laughs) Hopefully, people can see how much heart we tried to put into a lot of this stuff. Whether it’s a slimy, drippy illustration or it’s a family of typefaces, we try and give it the same amount of TLC, so hopefully that’ll translate. My luck, they’ll see the some of the projects we did that I think suck. (laughs)

What’s the most surprising place you’ve seen a house font? Does it still surprise you to see your fonts on certain things?

I’d hate to say it, but unless you see something that really blows you away, you sort of become immune to it after a while. I think the first real sighting was one of our early, crappy fonts that was used in a Saab campaign. Someone used Neutra for a tombstone in Germany. That was kind of cool. (laughs)

What a perfect way to end it. What typeface would you want your epitaph to be in?

I was at a funeral years ago and just kind of walking around the cemetery taking in the stonework. This one monument had this really intricate illustration of a’78 Corvette with like a big blower on it. It was truly amazing. Not that I’m thinking muscle car, but an illustration might be in order.
