Living Proof Magazine Issue 4: Adam Wallacavage

What was your early photography like? what did you shoot with?

I started with a 110 camera and jammed a peephole fisheye in the lens so that I could take cool warped looking photos. It worked, but the image was so small on the negative. I used to shoot with some funky contraptions at first.

What were your earliest photo influences, and how did that work shape yours?

It was a mixture of skateboarding photographers and underground comics really, and photographers who shot weird things like dinosaur parks, funny signs, and dogs pooping.

Who are your favorite photographers?

I never got that into having a favorite photographer. I just like silly stuff and accidents. I don’t know if I even have any photos on the walls in my house.

Why are you so into photography as an art?

I don’t really think my photography is art, I think it’s entertainment. The less I care about it as art, the better I like it.

Do you shoot digitally now? Has that affected your process or work?

I never liked printing photos or getting fancy with film. I hate it, actually. It’s just not my thing. I like being in funny situations or places and shooting photos that are both lucky and contrived, then posting them somewhere or nowhere or finding them years later in a pile or on some old CD. I wouldn’t be shooting nearly as much if it weren’t for digital cameras. I used to shoot a ton when I worked at a one hour photo lab because I was able to print stuff all the time easily. Digital gives me that tenfold. I love it.

Everyone knows how much of a photo guy you are, but what are some of your non-photography influences?

Baroque interiors, Sperm whales eating giant squids, toilet trained cats, Dan Tag.
