Living Proof Magazine Issue 5: Claw Money Feature

Intro and interview by Dan Christiansen

Teenage life on Long Island led Claw to find solace, therapy, life experience, work, ethic, and plenty of trouble in rebellion and spray paint. The femininely daunting iconic “W” with three ferociously sharp nails let you know that you’d better watch out. This female graffiti writer, who grew up in New York City before moving out of the bustle and into the ‘burbs, bombed the Big Apple along with her PMS crew. Going twice as hard as her male counterparts, Claw earned her way to respect in the graffiti world.

Around the same time the nails of Claw were scratching their way up the ranks to New York City graffiti glory, a girl named Claudia hustled in the rat race, working for fashion brands like Anne Klein before finding a place in the nightlife and nightclub scene in the early nineties. After that, she bounced around more in the fashion world, working as a vintage dealer and stylist. Claudia kept her nose to the grindstone instead of sniffing out trouble, shaping a glimmering for fashion that started as a kid, and remained a massive part of her life throughout. Climbing her way from hand-me-downs to safety pins to Gucci, Claudia’s knack for fashion flare was growing stronger than ever.

The id and ego met, or rather finally embraced one another with open arms, when, at the persuasiveness of fellow female spray-can cohort Miss17, Claw began writing again. Her signature tag was reawakening her old fans and inspiring a generation of new ones while graffiti was getting bigger than ever all over the world.

Screams and cries for a Claw t-shirt rang out from the mouths of an increasingly fashion-forward generation while Claudia quietly listened, and heard them loud and clear. In 2002, the Claw t-shirt was born, and Claw and Claudia became the same person, no longer leading their separate lives, but joining forces in an effort to make the coolest girl brand out there.

In the near ten years since then, the Claw Money brand has produced t-shirts, jackets, sunglasses, and accessories that all roar with female empowerment and an attitude that’s rife with intelligence, humor, and swagger. With a line-up that brings together classic luxury and “that time of the month,” the brand digs its nails into what both have come to represent and shreds it into something new. Claw Money’s not afraid to grab the world by the balls and own it.
