The Portsmouth Museum of Art and LeBasse Projects SugiPOP!: The Influence of Anime and Manga on Contemporary Art

What do Takashi Murakami, Junko Mizuno, KAWS, Gary Baseman, Natalia Fabia, and Tomokazu Matsuyama have in common? Besides being some of our favorite artists, the group, along with a whole cast of others will be featured in SugiPOP! a new show opening at the Portsmouth Museum of Art in New Hampshire. In conjunction with LeBasse Projects, and curated by Beau Basse, the show features the work of thirty artists tracing the origins of manga, the rise of Japanese contemporary art, and how the art forms in those respective realms have influenced various artists from around the world, bringing together a blend of Japanese and American art shaped and defined by over-the-top-pop.

The exhibition opens up on October 13th, 2010 and runs through January 16th, 2011. Admission is free.
