Opening up a new pool for the DIYer is challenging, especially if you are new in this world. But it will not be a problem now as we described the step by step guide on starting up the pool.

Here we go.

Step 1

First off, turn your filter system or pool system on. Before starting it on, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for faultless installation.

Step 2

Before adding any amount of water balancing ingredient or chemical, test your pool water beforehand.

Using the pool water test kit, you can check the alkalinity level or acidic level.

According to the result, adjust the pool water by adding or subtracting chemicals. Before applying any chemicals, make sure you read the user instruction.

Step 3

After balancing the alkalinity level, it’s time to check the pH level of your pool water.

Again take the sample water and test it using the water testing kit.

Based on the result, adjust the pH level of the water. For example, add the pH increaser if the level of ph is low.

On the other hand, add the pH decreaser if the pH level is high.

Step 4

After balancing both alkalinity & pH levels, it’s time to give a chlorine shock. It helps to keep your pool water out of algae, germs, and bacteria.

Cal hypo or sodium hypo, and chlorine are generally used to shock the pool. What amount of cal hypo or sodium hypo you need to apply to shock the pool depends on the pool size. For example, applying 10 ounces of hypo sodium with 12.5 chlorine is ok for a 10000-gallon pool.

On the other hand, it is ok to use 1 pound of cal hypo for a 10000-gallon pool. We recommend you to test the water before applying those chemicals to see whether the water is normal or not. Also, check the ph level and alkalinity level is between 7.2-7.6.

To sanitize the water, you can use the sodium hypo in your pool directly. But when it comes to applying cal hypo, you need to dissolve it before using it in the water.

Lastly, turn on the pool filter for at least 24 hours to sanitize the water.

Step 5

In the last step, we recommend you to retest your pool water to see whether the water is balanced or not.

If the level of pH and alkalinity is high or low, adjust it. And now your pool is ready for swimming.
